A Woman is the Full Circle – Within her is the Power to Create, Nurture and Transform. …Diane MarieChild

Life Story of Ms. Hemangi Shah – Educator, Entrepreneur and Partner (Prism Edutives)

Born in a middle class professional family, Hemangi had always been a good student at school, and a voracious reader. Right from a very young age, she had an independent streak in her and disliked to depend on anyone for finances. She worked on audits with her father during her college days. She completed her B.com from Podar Collage and also did a Diploma in Financial Management where she topped her class.

After marriage at the age of 24 years, life took a turn and she had to make a lot of adjustments to her nature to settle into a joint family. Years seem to melt away after her daughters were born, but the independent streak in her remained. She started helping her husband in his business, but soon enough, he encouraged her to explore something on her own. She realised that she could connect intuitively to children and their needs. She made up her mind to work with children. She completed courses in graphology, Vedic Maths, Metaphor Therapy, IGCSE Teacher Training Diploma and Diploma in identification of learning disabilities.

While doing her diploma, her mind wondered why the techniques that she had learnt could not be applied to benefit every child – and that’s how her venture Prism Edutives was born. Prism Edutives ventured in academic classes, to writing a grammar rule book to creating board games.

Looking back on the challenges she faced in her entrepreneurial journey, she speaks about “a lack of understanding of business dynamics, absence of a good mentor, mistaking passion for success, being too emotionally attached to the product in a way that rationality and practicality became secondary, not having a team who made up for my shortcomings, not taking timely help and not having a proper business model in place.” Hemangi feels that these were the factors which prevented PRISM from becoming a big brand.

However, there were many supremely satisfying moments as well which more than made up for the challenges. Like when she worked with a child who had ADHD and gradually he started responding to the treatment. His language skills and confidence improved tremendously. His willingness to listen to her and ability to connect with him positively proved to be of immense satisfaction to her. Besides this, there are several students who do not listen to other teachers, but willingly obey her and complete their assignments on time. She treasures this priceless tag of “Best Teacher” given to her by many of her students.

When asked how she defines success, she says that one is successful when one can enjoy what he/she has achieved and when one makes a positive difference to someone else’s life.

On the personal front, as far as her family is concerned, she likes to take one step at a time. She has recently opened up to doing impromptu things with her family – be it cooking a special meal or dinner dates or even dancing. As far as motherhood goes, she says she has learned the hard way that effective communication was the key to having an excellent rapport with her daughters. Her experience taught her that listening to the unsaid, asking them what they mean instead of jumping to conclusions and framing responses instead of just reacting immediately – are the key to being a great mom.

Speaking of moms, Hemangi says that her mom has been her biggest inspiration. She is independent, non-judgemental and lives her life to the fullest.

Her advice to fellow mompreneurs is “Always believe in yourself; love yourself and this will lead you to achieve anything you want.”

We admire the spirit of this woman achiever and wish her all the best for all her future endeavours.

I had a opportunity to be friend of Hemangi. I fully echo the facts mentioned in the article. She has been always motivating and positive. I have never heard she saying that “you are wrong”…. her statement has always brought in new ideas like ” we should do it this way…” I have not met any other person better than Hemangi for carrier counseling – very clear thoughts and focused approached. Thank you Hemangi for your help and support. Keep inspiring all.
